We pulled up water-stained laminate in a Leucadia bungalow off Neptune Avenue last spring and put down engineered white oak. The homeowner had lived three blocks from the sand for twenty years, and every floor before ours had cupped.

Encinitas holds moisture. Homes near Moonlight Beach and Cardiff-by-the-Sea keep dampness in the subfloor long after the fog burns off, and solid planks nailed to a slab move with it. That movement shows up as gaps in July and cupping in January.

Solid or Engineered Oak Near the Coast?

For most Encinitas homes west of El Camino Real, we install engineered oak. The cross-ply core holds its shape when relative humidity swings from 45% to 70% across a season. Solid oak still works well inland, up in Olivenhain and Encinitas Ranch where the air runs drier.

We acclimate every board inside the house for at least 72 hours before a single plank goes down. Skip that step near the coast and you are back sanding gaps in eighteen months.
