What does 1,000 sq ft of laminate cost to install in San Diego?

A 1,000 sq ft laminate flooring install in San Diego runs $6,800-$11,400 fully installed, based on our last 18 jobs. Mid-grade 12mm AC4 laminate sits at $7,400-$9,200. Premium 12mm water-resistant laminate with attached underlayment runs $8,800-$11,400. Cheap 8mm box-store laminate lands near $6,800 but fails in 5-7 years.

We pulled the invoices from every 800-1,200 sq ft laminate job we closed since January 2025. Eighteen of them. The numbers below are what people actually paid, not what an ad says.

Where the price comes from

Three things move the number: material grade, subfloor prep, and the trim and transition work nobody thinks about until walk-through.

Material runs $1.40 to $4.80 per sq ft retail. AC4-rated 12mm planks are the floor we recommend for most homes. AC3 wears through within a few years in a Carmel Valley family kitchen with two dogs. We have seen it.

Labor is steady at around $3 to $4.50 per sq ft installed, more if the rooms have lots of cuts. A long rectangular living room installs faster per square foot than a chopped-up 1960s Clairemont floor plan with five doorways.

Subfloor prep is where bids diverge

Most homes built in San Diego before 1985 have slab variation over 3/16" per 10 feet. Laminate clicks together, so it telegraphs every dip. We grind or self-level any high or low spots beyond spec. On a 1,000 sq ft floor that adds $400-$1,200 depending on slab condition.

Cheap bids skip this step. Then the floor creaks in six months.

Laminate vs vinyl plank in San Diego homes

For South Bay homes and inland Escondido properties with strong afternoon sun, we lean laminate. SPC vinyl in a Poway sunroom we replaced last March had cupped because the manufacturer's heat spec got blown past on a 102°F day.

Real numbers from three recent jobs

Encinitas, 1,040 sq ft, mid-grade AC4 laminate, oak visual: $8,640 installed. Existing tile demo added $1,800.

Rancho Bernardo, 1,180 sq ft, premium 12mm water-resistant with attached pad: $10,920 installed. Subfloor grind to flatten cracked slab: $720.

Vista, 960 sq ft, builder-grade 8mm clearance laminate: $5,400 installed. We told the client the floor would not hold up. He wanted the price. Job worked, but we will not be back in five years to refinish anything because laminate cannot be refinished.

What changes the price beyond material and labor

Demo. Pulling up bonded vinyl from a 1970s tract home runs slower than pulling up floating laminate. Budget $1-$2 per sq ft for demo.

Stairs. Laminate on stairs adds $90-$140 per tread. Most 1,000 sq ft jobs have at least a small landing or two-step transition.

Quarter round and shoe molding. Stained and installed runs $4-$7 per linear foot. A 1,000 sq ft job typically has 180-240 linear feet of perimeter.

Threshold transitions to tile or carpet. T-molding or reducers run $30-$60 per opening.

HOA and condo rules

Second-floor condos in La Jolla, Del Mar, and parts of Carmel Valley require sound-rated underlayment, usually IIC 65 or better. That adds $0.80-$1.40 per sq ft over a basic foam pad. We have been turned away from final inspection twice because a homeowner installed cheap underlay against the HOA spec.

Where laminate is the wrong call

Bathrooms. Even water-resistant laminate fails when standing water sits at the seams. Use vinyl plank or tile.

Coastal homes within 800 feet of the ocean. We have pulled laminate out of Cardiff and Solana Beach houses where the seams swelled within two summers. Salt air carries moisture inland. Engineered hardwood with a sealed click system holds up better.

Homes with radiant heat. Most laminate manufacturers void the warranty above 85°F surface temp. We have walked off jobs where the contractor before us installed laminate over hydronic without checking.

What we charge for a 1,000 sq ft laminate install

Standard 1,000 sq ft of mid-grade 12mm AC4 laminate, basic demo of existing carpet, light subfloor prep, quarter round, and three transition pieces: $8,200-$9,400 in most San Diego ZIP codes. Add for tile demo, slab grinding, stairs, or HOA-required underlayment.

If you want a number for your specific room, send square footage and a photo of the existing floor. We will quote within a day.

If we installed your floor recently, mention the room and your neighborhood in a Google review. It helps people in Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Escondido find us when they are looking for the same work.
