What Metallic Epoxy Floors Actually Cost in San Diego

Metallic epoxy floors in San Diego run $8 to $15 per square foot installed. A 400 sq ft garage lands between $3,200 and $6,000. Cost depends on slab prep, pigment brand, and topcoat choice. Moisture mitigation adds roughly $2 per sq ft on older slab-on-grade homes. Last updated: April 2026.

The downsides nobody mentions at the sales pitch

Metallic epoxy looks incredible. We've poured floors in Carlsbad showrooms and Poway home gyms that stop people at the doorway. Real tradeoffs exist, though.

Hot tire pickup. UV yellowing. Moisture blistering. Scratch visibility. Slickness when wet.

Hot tire pickup is the big one for garages

Summer tires in San Diego reach 130 to 150 degrees after a drive up the 15. Park on fresh epoxy within 72 hours of topcoat cure and the plasticizers in the tire will soften the coating and pull up a tire-shaped patch the next time you move the car. We wait 7 days minimum before a vehicle touches a new floor.

UV yellowing on sun-exposed slabs

Standard epoxy is aromatic chemistry. It ambers under UV. A garage floor with a west-facing door sees direct sun for four hours a day out here. Within 18 months, white and pearl pigments look like old piano keys. We specify an aliphatic polyaspartic topcoat on any surface that gets direct sun. That adds about $1.50 per sq ft. Worth every cent.

Moisture vapor transmission wrecks cheap installs

Our crew tore out a failed epoxy pour in Escondido last winter. The previous installer skipped moisture testing. The slab was reading 5 pounds per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours on a calcium chloride test. Anything over 3 pounds and epoxy blisters within a year. We run three CaCl tests minimum on any slab-on-grade pour, 72 hours each.

How thick should the system actually be?

A proper metallic system totals 40 to 60 mils across primer, metallic pigment coat, and polyaspartic topcoat. Budget installs skip the primer. Those floors peel, usually at edges first.

Where metallic epoxy earns its price

Interior commercial spaces. Showrooms. Home gyms with rubber mat coverage. Laundry rooms. Any floor that isn't directly sunlit and doesn't see tire heat.

We poured a 2,100 sq ft showroom in Carlsbad two years ago, copper-bronze metallic with a matte polyaspartic topcoat. Still looks like the day we rolled it out.

What we tell homeowners about garages

If you want metallic in a daily-driver garage, budget for a recoat every 5 to 7 years. If that math doesn't work, we steer you toward polished concrete or a polyaspartic flake floor. Both last longer and cost less per year of service.
